The Numerical Aspects of Maps

This module looks at the various numerical aspects of maps. These aspects are related, however the relationships are not necessarily obvious. The most readily understood, (and arguably the most important) numerical information on a map is scale. Coordinate references are also important to accurately specify locations. These references include both the global coordinates of latitude and longitude, and planar coordinates. Planar coordinates are used to describe locations on 2 dimensional paper maps. In this section, as in other sections, the map user is encouraged to be aware of information that is not explicitly printed on the map which may still be important.
Throughout this chapter there will be short quizes to test your skills. Click this symbol to find out the answers.
