Background
Derek has an undergraduate degree in geography from Bristol University and a postgraduate degree in planning from Oxford Polytechnic and a Diploma in Local History from Oxford University. After working in the Planning Departments of Gloucestershire and Staffordshire County Councils, he became a lecturer in planning at Liverpool Polytechnic. He moved to New Zealand to take up a lectureship at Massey University.


Research Interests
Derek's current teaching and research interests focus on Geographic Information Systems, particularly the application of GIS to historical data and the application of GIS to planning and decision-making. Further details can be found at http://gisweb.massey.ac.nz/gisresearch.htm.
